However, the past two centuries where religion has been removed from society clearly indicate that human conflict happens not so much because of religion, but despite religion. The common meme here is that religion is responsible for human conflict and if we could just eliminate religion, we would eliminate human conflict. Not to be argumentative or repetitive, but two centuries of secularism and atheism coupled with the greatest advances in human "science, law, politics, psychology, and medicine" have resulted in more human conflict, death, and destruction than all of previous human history combined. Law, politics, psychology, and medicine have nearly closed the gap on understanding and managing human morality, but not quite in my view. No other human endeavour seems to satisfactorily fill the role religion has occupied thus far. I'm not certain it is at all wise to leave all forms of religion behind us just yet.
